Good readers develop new vocabulary as they read. Look for unfamiliar, unusual, interesting or puzzling words as you read.

Sentence from the story: Intially, life with the Dodgers was for Jackie a series of humilations.
Meaning of the word: to be reduced to a lower postion in one's own eyes or the eyes of another
Word: Sooty(Emily)
Sentence from the story: He is sooty and unwashed, like all the rest of us, and tries to keep clean by scrubbing his face with snow, but it just streaks the dirt.
Meaning of the word: Blackish or dusky with color
Word: Chinda Taa go(Emily)
Sentence from the book: "Chinda taa go!" Grandmother hissed, offended.
Meaning of the word: Cannot find it. But in the book, it says it is a swear word.
Word:Streak (Hailey)
Sentence from the book:He is sooty and unwashed, like all the rest of us, and tries to keep clean by scrubbing his face with snow, but it just Streaks the dirt.
Meaning of the word: The color of the fine powder of a mineral obtained by scratching or rubbing against a hard white surface and constittuting on important distinguishing character.
